Understanding The Affordable Care Act

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -

The Affordable Care Act will go into effect on January 1, 2014.

Thursday the Idaho Department of Insurance released the Essential Health Benefits that will be a part of every plan.

TheĀ current focusĀ is on education and outreach to prepare people to shop for health insurance and compare plans in the marketplace beginning October 1.

"So the idea is to provide insurance vehicles to population base that up to this point hasn't been able to afford it or not had access to it," said Josh Tolman, Chief Administrative Officer at Mountain View Hospital.

The Affordable Care Act mandates that certain preventative measures be a part of every policy, whether the policy comes through the exchange, medicare or medicaid, an employer or private insurance.

The Idaho Department of Insurance released the 10 Essential Health Benefits of the Affordable Care Act. The include; ambulance services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health services, prescription drug coverage, rehab services and devices, laboratory services, preventative and wellness services like mammograms and chronic disease management, pediatric services including oral and vision care.

"For people who have insurance through their employer group as those policies renew those essential benefits will become a part of those policies as well," said Tricia Carney with the Idaho Department of Insurance.

"What we see in the health care market is that a lot of people don't take advantage of those preventative coverages they have within their health plan and so the impact of this law really depends on us personally and how we utilize and how we take responsibility for our own health," said Tolman.

In the next few months we'll answer all of your questions and walk your through the changes step by step.
