Madison School District to ask for more portable classrooms

Published On: Jul 31 2013 05:56:14 PM CDT
REXBURG, Idaho -

Students at a local school district will likely be headed outside, and not for recess.

The Madison School District is asking Rexburg for conditional-use permits to either add or keep portable classrooms at every school in city limits.

This request comes just three years after the district built a brand new high school.

District administrators said the student body is growing fast, but it's still not enough to open yet another school. Still, they said something needs to be done to alleviate the crowded schools.

"If we can't fill a school, we can't get the funding to staff it and fund the utilities and so forth for the school, so really it's kind of a stop-gap to keep us in business here," said Varr Snedaker, business manager for the Madison School District.

Opponents of the classrooms worry about the quality and appearance of the temporary structures.

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the portable classrooms on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m.
