PORTLAND, Ore. -

A man originally from eastern Idaho is dead after a parking garage shootout with police in Portland, Ore., on Monday night.

"It was incredibly fast very unexpected,” said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Department. “They were not on a call so they had no prewarning or anything of what they might be going to because they weren't going to anything."

According to police, Santiago Cisneros opened fire on officers with a shotgun. They fired back, hitting Cisneros. He later died at a nearby hospital.

Local media said just moments before the shooting began, Cisneros was on the phone with one of his parents and implied that he was going to die.

According to his LinkedIn account, the 32-year-old spent three years in the Army, was a former student at Idaho State University and worked at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center until 2001.

Cisneros was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after being discharged from the Army.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation. Neither officer was hit by gunfire in the shooting.
