DETROIT -

In what Hyundai says is purely a design exercise, the company showed off its HCD-14 Genesis concept Monday at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

With its massive grille, short greenhouse and rear-hinged rear doors, Hyundai says the HCD-14 Genesis is more about conceptual design than practical production.

Among the futuristic features is an eye-tracking and 3-D hand gesture system that lets the driver control several of the car’s functions simply by looking or pointing at them.  Hyundai says systems like this can make future cars safer, since they help to keep the driver’s eyes on the road.

Propelling the car is handled by something a little more conventional: It uses Hyundai’s powerful 5-liter V-8 engine connected to an eight-speed transmission.

While it shares the name Genesis, Hyundai is quick to point out that this car is not a direct preview of the next Genesis sedan -- that car is expected to be revealed next year.
